2 children using a balance scale
  1. Say: This is a balance scale. It is a type of lever that compares two weights.
  2. Ask: Which side of the scale in the photo is heavier? How do you know? The side that is heavier tilts to the ground. The side that is lighter goes up.
  3. Place the 5-pound item (bag of flour) in one bag and the 2-pound item (bag of rice) in the other. Have your child lift both bags at the same time in opposite hands. Ask: Which bag is heavier? Why do you think so? Have her tip her arms so the heavier sack is near the floor.
