Simple experiment discovering the water cycle; Precipitation, evaporation and condensation in a covered bowl

Water Cycle

  1. Carefully pour one cup of boiling water in a large, clear bowl. Invite your child to add a sprinkle of salt. Tell your child that this water will represent the ocean.
  2. Place a small clear bowl inside the larger bowl to represent land. Have your child help you cover the large bowl with plastic wrap to represent the clouds.
  3. Invite your child to place three or four ice cubes on top of the “clouds” to represent the colder atmosphere (air).
  4. After 10 minutes, remove the ice cubes and take off the “clouds” (plastic wrap). Water droplets (“rain”) will have fallen from the “clouds” into the small bowl (“land”).
