  1. Have your child point to and read numerals on the menu. Ask: What do those numerals mean? Explain that these numerals tell how much the food will cost. Numerals can also tell how many of something.
  2. Invite your child to pretend to order from the menu. Write down the order on a note pad. Point out numerals, tally marks, words and pictures you use. Read the order back to your child.
  3. Have your child write down your pretend order. Say: I’ll have two eggs, three sausage links, and one glass of milk. Encourage your child to use numbers, tally marks, words and pictures to write the order. Ask your child to repeat your order.
